At Paprika we are passionate about what we do. As well as loving the products we sell we are also very keen to know all about where they come from, how they are made, what they are made of & who makes them. Many of our products are produced overseas & If we are not satisfied that the item meets our standards of being ethically produced including no explotation of workers, using sustainable resources & causing no harm to the enviroment and not being tested on animals we do not sell it. Many of our suppliers are registered "Fair Trade" or waiting to be registered. Others we check the origins of their products to make sure they are ethically produced. Often we are able to see photographs of the factories etc. which are inspected regularly to ensure good working conditions & a fair wage. Some of our suppliers directly support charities & cooperatives set up for the benefit of the workers & their families & communities. We do our best to use recycled materials for packaging & often our products are made from recycled items & have an eco-ffiendly message.
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is all about fair, sustainable wages, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for producers of goods and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which has previously discriminated against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives & communities. Fairtrade standards comprise both minimum social, economic and environmental requirements, which producers must meet to be certified, plus progress requirements that encourage continuous improvement to develop producers’ organisations or the situation of the workers.
The concept of ‘fair trade’ has been around for over 40 years but a formal labelling scheme didn’t get off the ground until the late 1980s. It was initially implemented for the farming industry but is equally beneficial now in the production of crafts, gifts & homeware products.
The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on UK products as a guarantee that they have been certified against internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. It shares internationally recognised Fairtrade standards with initiatives in 20 other countries, working together globally with producer networks as Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO). The Mark indicates that the product has been certified to give a better deal to the producers involved – it does not act as an endorsement of an entire company’s business practices.
